What a day for news in Canada. We’ve got lots of pot stories to cover.
First we have the news that Health Canada is going to invite new firms to supply them with medical marijuana. Apparently Ottawa can’t let Prairie Plant Systems have a monopoly on growing medpot for ever.
Fuck I wish I was in a situation where I could place a bid for this contract. I’d love to grow Health Canada’s pot – think of all the sick people you would be directly benefitting. Not to mention the massive amount of bud that you’d get to grow year round. It would be heaven. And just imagine getting paid to do it!
It’s interesting that in addition to soliciting bids to grow bud, Health Canada made mention of elimintaing the provisions in the medical marijuana regulations that allow a person to grow their own marijuana. What an absolute shame it is that Stephen Harper would think that it should be his priority to force sick people to only buy their medicine from Health Canada when they can grow a superior medicine themselves. What a complete lack of compassion. A perfect example of Conservative policy driven by dogma rather than common sense. It could be that Harper just doesn’t understand that different strains of cannabis have different characteristics that help the sick, but I don’t believe that at all. He’s too smart. He understands the issue and is deciding to do what he thinks will most appease his base of support. Sticking it to the evil drug users.
In reality however, the whole idea of having a Conservative government pay a company to grow marijuana is astonishingly humorous. First of all, Conservative pot dealers – that’s just funny period. Then to think that they’re paying someone to do what any moron can do themselves. If the Conservatives actually implemented a public policy for cannabis that aligned with their supposed principles we’d have a completely privatized cannabis industry. A free weed market. Conservatives supposedly support free market economics and there’s no legitimate argument for keeping marijuana illegal anymore – so why not?
Because of the USA, that’s why. Even though the harms of legalizing cannabis don’t come close to outweighing the harms caused by continuing to prohibit cannabis – things won’t change. Not while the USA still wants it illegal. And certainly not while Bush and Harper are in power. Hey Dubya and Stevie, the facts are in. The drug war is a failure. Time to put down the guns and let the cancer patients have their cannabis.
In related news, we now have data showing that Health Canada’s medpot program is owed $500,000 by its patients. Hah! Only the government could lose money dealing drugs! My thoughts on this are “you get what you deserve”.
Harper should be passing laws that allow volunteer organizations to grow organic marijuana for authorized sick people. Those groups can give the shit to the sick for nothing and “poof” the problem of not being paid by sick people who can’t work for a living because they’re too busy shitting blood goes away. But no. Because of Ottawa’s insistence on continuing their failed prohibition on cannabis we’re still going through this stupid song and dance.
And last but not least, it looks like what everyone knows is also finally known by the media. Canadians who smoke pot are getting older. Whoa. Trippy.
All this news story tells me is that:
A. Canadians are more informed about marijuana than ever before.
B. Because they’re more informed they’re choosing to use cannabis rather than the more harmful alternatives, alcohol and tobacco.
C. At the same time as being more informed about the marijuana they’re using – they aged.
God bless these Canucks for choosing the recreational drug that makes the most sense – marijuana. As the evidence that marijuana needs to be legalized mounts we’re all becoming more and more aware of how we’ve been lied to about marijuana. Pot isn’t the devil’s weed we were told it was as kids. It’s a herb that makes you happy, hungry and sleepy. We certainly have higher priorities than to be trying to put the cannabis using culture behind bars. Don’t we?
(Of course when I advocate cannabis use I only mean responsible adult use – children should not be allowed to use cannabis anymore than they should be allowed to shoot tequila and snort coke off a hooker’s ass.)
