Why Punish Michael Phelps for Doing the Same Thing Millions Do Every Day

“The whole Michael Phelps bong hit bullshit is getting to be a bit much. Thank God the media hungry Sheriff in Phelp’s home state has decided to not pursue charges based on a lack of evidence. No shit buddy, you should have known you had no case before you got on TV and puked out your drug war rhetoric.

For fuck sakes, isn’t it time that we legalized marijuana anyway? Doesn’t this Phelps shit make it painfully obvious that our marijuana laws are fucked up? I mean come on…so many successful, wealthy, smart professionals that I know use cannabis. I’ve met doctors, lawyers, police, journalists, tv personalities, athletes, professors, engineers, project managers, farmers, welders, bus drivers and singers that use marijuana (probably more if I keep thinking). More of these people need to get vocal on this issue and do what they can to spread the wisdom of ending drug prohibition. Then we might start to get somewhere in this movement.

But let’s face it, the real reason people demonize role models like Phelps over pot use is to publicly shame them so badly that nobody wants to come out and publicly advocate on behalf of legalizaing marijuana. If people are afraid of being blasted by the media when their name and marijuana are mentioned in the same sentence they will remain silent. And if there are no voices against prohibition, prohibition will be the drug policy that remains in place, sadly.

So, if you are reading this I ask that you grab a pen and paper and write a letter to your political leader, your newspaper or anyone you can think of that should be told that it’s time for our marijuana laws to change. And keep writing. Keep spreading the truth. Don’t give up. One day we will be recognized as the wise citizens who advocated for smarter drug policies during a dark era of drug addiction, drug crime violence and public apathy to the dark side of drug prohibition.

Also, join me and show your support for saner drug policy by signing the boycott of Kellogg cereal (the sponsor that dropped Michael Phelps).

One day people will have to stop ignoring the facts, and we’ll be there to say I told you so!”
